Professional installation required

Gas water heaters, boilers, wall furnaces and fan convectors must be installed by a licensed, qualified professional (plumber, HVAC or gas contractor) in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions and all applicable local, state and national codes, including gas, venting, electrical and plumbing codes. Permits may be required in your area.

Before you order

  • Fuel type: choose the model that matches your gas supply. Models for natural gas and liquid propane are different products.
  • Location: indoor models require proper venting to the outside; outdoor models must be installed outdoors only.
  • Gas supply and venting: high-input appliances may need a larger gas line and specific vent materials. Your installer can confirm requirements.
  • Vent-free heaters: check that vent-free appliances are permitted in your city or county before purchase.

Carbon monoxide safety

All fuel-burning appliances can produce carbon monoxide (CO), a colorless, odorless gas. Install working carbon monoxide detectors as required by law and recommended by the manufacturer, and never block vents or air intakes. If you smell gas, leave the building immediately and call your gas utility or 911 from a safe location.
